Molasses Milk: Bone Elixir

Molasses Milk: Bone Elixir

Maintaining bone health during pregnancy and breastfeeding is important for lifelong health and osteoporosis prevention.

During pregnancy, the baby growing in its mother’s womb needs plenty of calcium to develop its skeleton. This need is especially great during the last 3 months of pregnancy. If the mother doesn’t get enough calcium, her baby will draw what it needs from the mother’s bones. In addition, breastfeeding also affects a mother’s bones. Studies have shown that women often lose 3 to 5 percent of their bone mass during breastfeeding, although they recover it rapidly after weaning.

Blackstrap molasses serves as a high source of calcium. Enjoy this sweet and delicious recipe as a tea or chill and use as a base for your morning granola!

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Serving: 1 big cup

IMG_5643A flavorful and nutritious milk sweetened with molasses for added iron, calcium, and potassium.

2 cups almond milk (or milk alternative) or 1 cup milk + 1 cup water

2 teaspoon unsulfured black strap molasses

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon coconut oil

Heat all of the ingredients over medium heat until warmed but not boiling in a small sauce pan.

Whisk until the coconut oil has melted and the molasses is mixed throughout the milk.

If you want a frothy topping add the milk to a blender and blend for 10-15 seconds.

Serve immediately or store.

As many times as you would like, just add with a balanced diet. Congrats!
